Saptamathas

The divine mothers, nurturing life with boundless love and wisdom.

The term ‘Matha’ refers to mother, and ‘Mathas’ signifies a group of mothers and Sapta-Mathas are the seven mothers. They are believed to be among the several incarnations of Goddess Shakti. As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that the sapthamathas are manifested to demolish thousands of demons that were born from the blood of Andhaka Asura.

Devotees consider these Sapta Mathas to be the symbols of the seven spiritual rules that govern the spiritual path. The seven mothers are Brahmani (wife of Brahma), Maheshvari (wife of Shiva), Kaumari (wife of Kumara), Vaishnavi (wife of Vishnu), Varahi (wife of Varaha, or the boar, an avatar [incarnation] of Vishnu), Indrani (wife of Indra), and Chamunda, or Yami (wife of Yama). Each of the seven mothers is associated with a particular deity or concept.

Worshiping the Sapthamathas is believed to bring blessings, protection, and fulfillment of specific desires for devotees. Each manifestation of the Goddess Adi Parashakti is associated with unique qualities, and by seeking their favor, worshipers hope to receive guidance, protection from adversity, and the fulfillment of their specific needs and aspirations.
